No internet? The exam still happens.
No school should have to bet two hours of a hall full of pupils on the network holding up. So the CBT app holds the paper on one proctor laptop, serves it to every candidate over the room’s own Wi-Fi, and marks the papers there and then. When the connection returns, each sat paper syncs back and lands on the report card as though it had never been offline.

An offline mark and an online mark cannot disagree
This is the part schools worry about, so it is the part we were strictest about. An exam sat with no internet is marked to exactly the same standard as one sat online — the marking does not change because the hall was offline. Every paper is verified against your school’s records when it syncs, and a result only posts once it checks out.

After you download
- 1On a Mac, open the .dmg and drag Klasstack CBT into Applications. On Windows, run the installer.
- 2Sign in with your school account to link the laptop — do this while you still have internet.
- 3Pull the papers you are sitting. From there, the exam runs with no connection at all.

- What is CBT exam software?
- CBT (computer-based testing) software lets a school set and deliver exams on screen instead of on paper — students answer on a device, objective questions are marked automatically, and the scores go straight into the school’s records. Klasstack includes CBT as part of the school management platform, so exam scores land in the same gradebook and report cards as the rest of the term’s work.
- Can we run CBT without internet?
- Yes. The Klasstack CBT app holds the exam on a single proctor laptop and serves it to the hall over local Wi-Fi, so a sitting needs no internet at all. It marks the papers on the spot and syncs each one back to your school afterwards, held to the same marking standard an online sitting uses.
- How do we get the app?
- Download it above. Klasstack CBT 1.0.0 runs on both macOS and Windows, and it is free with your Klasstack plan. On a Mac, take the Apple silicon or the Intel build; on Windows, take the .exe installer, or the .msi package if your IT team deploys software centrally. Install it on the laptop that will run the hall, then sign in with your school account.
- How many students can sit an exam at once?
- Online there is no hall limit — students sit from any device with a connection. Offline, the app is built to serve a full exam hall from one proctor machine over the room’s Wi-Fi, with each student on their own browser. We size it against your actual hall and candidate numbers when we set you up, rather than asking you to guess from a spec sheet.
- What do students need to install?
- Nothing at all. They open a link on the local network in whatever browser their machine already has, and enter a short exam code to be admitted. There is no server to configure and no per-student setup on exam day.
- What happens if the power goes out mid-exam?
- Answers are saved as candidates work, so a machine losing power does not cost that candidate their progress — they sign back in and carry on from where they stopped. Keeping the exam laptop on a small inverter or UPS is the practical safeguard, and it is one of the things we walk through during setup.
- Can a teacher see the questions before the exam?
- No. The paper stays sealed from the moment it is downloaded until the person running the exam opens it at the start of the sitting, and it is closed again when the exam ends. Nobody can read the questions or the answers off the laptop in between.
- Does it prepare students for national CBT exams?
- That is much of the point. Students practise with a countdown timer, a numbered question navigator and one-question-at-a-time delivery — the same shape as the national computer-based exams they will sit — so exam day is familiar rather than intimidating. You can also keep past-question banks tagged by examining body and year.
- How do we stop cheating in an online exam?
- Each exam has its own settings: fullscreen can be enforced, copy, paste and right-click blocked, questions shown one at a time, and a warning shown before a candidate can close or reload the page. Tab-switches and fullscreen exits are flagged live to any staff member monitoring the exam.
- Do teachers have to retype all their questions?
- No. Questions can be typed, bulk-pasted, reused from a question bank, or extracted by AI from a paper you paste in. The AI output is always a draft — a teacher reviews and edits before anything is saved.
- What does CBT cost?
- CBT is part of the Klasstack platform rather than a separate product, so it comes with your plan — the desktop app included. You can register your school and start setting exams without paying upfront.
